3 Days in Marrakech

3 Days in Marrakech: The Best Marrakech Itinerary

Planning to spend 3 days in Marrakech, Morocco? Three days is a great amount of time to discover the Red City without feeling too rushed.

Marrakech is a city of contrasts. Inside the ancient Medina, you will find colorful souks, historic palaces, beautiful gardens, traditional riads and lively squares. Outside the old city, you can discover modern neighborhoods, excellent restaurants, museums and relaxing hammams.

As local Moroccan guides based in Marrakech, we recommend combining the city’s main historical sights with time to simply enjoy the atmosphere. You do not need to see everything in one day. The best Marrakech experience comes from walking through the Medina, enjoying Moroccan food, sitting on a rooftop at sunset and taking some time to slow down.

In this 3-day Marrakech itinerary, we will show you what to see and do each day, where to stay, how to get around and some useful local tips.

  • Jemaa el-Fnaa
  • Medrassa Ben Youssef
  • Souks
  • Traditional Moroccan lunch
  • Rooftop sunset

Day 2: Palaces, Gardens & Moroccan Culture

  • Saadian Tombs

  • Option 3: Relaxing day in Marrakech
  • Last-minute shopping in the souks
  • Moroccan dinner with show

Day 1: Explore the Medina, Souks & Jemaa el-Fnaa

Your first day should be dedicated to the heart of Marrakech: the Medina (Old city)

The old city is where you will experience the Marrakech that most visitors imagine before arriving in Morocco. The narrow streets, colorful markets, traditional architecture and small workshops make Medina one of the most interesting parts of the city.

Start at Koutoubia Mosque

Begin your morning at the famous Koutoubia Mosque, the largest mosque in Marrakech and one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

The mosque dates back to the 12th century, and its impressive minaret can be seen from many parts of Medina.

Non-Muslim visitors cannot enter the mosque, but you can walk around the gardens and enjoy the architecture from outside.

Walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa

From Koutoubia, walk towards Jemaa el-Fnaa, the famous central square of Marrakech.

During the day, you will find juice stalls, local vendors and people coming and going through the square. In the evening, the atmosphere changes completely as food stalls, musicians and performers bring the square to life.

Jemaa el-Fnaa and the cultural traditions associated with it are an important part of Marrakech’s heritage. The official Marrakech tourism guide also highlights the square as part of its historic Medina route.

Visit Medrassa Ben Youssef

Continue through the Medina to Medrassa Ben Youssef , one of the most beautiful historic buildings in the heart of Marrakech.

The Medrassa was built originally in the 14th century and is famous for its decorated ceilings, colorful zellige tiles, carved plasterwork, courtyards and the132 dorms of the students back then.

Take your time here rather than rushing through. The details of the architecture are one of the main reasons to visit.

Explore the Marrakech Souks

After visiting Bahia Palace, continue into the famous souks of Marrakech.

The souks are not just one market. They are a network of small streets where you can find:

  • Moroccan lamps
  • Leather bags
  • Babouches
  • Carpets
  • Spices
  • Ceramics
  • Jewelry
  • Traditional clothing
  • Handmade souvenirs

Getting a little lost is part of the experience.

A local shopping tip

If you see something you really like, don’t feel pressured to buy it immediately. Compare prices in a few shops and negotiate politely.

Remember that bargaining is part of the shopping culture, but it should remain friendly and enjoyable.

Lunch in the Medina

For lunch, try a traditional Moroccan restaurant or rooftop terrace.

Some popular Moroccan dishes to try include:

  • Chicken or vegetable tagine
  • Beef or lamb tagine with prunes
  • Couscous
  • Moroccan salads
  • Harira soup
  • Pastilla
  • Mint tea

Sunset at Jemaa el-Fnaa

Return towards Jemaa el-Fnaa in the late afternoon.

One of our favorite ways to finish the first day is to find a rooftop terrace overlooking the square, order a Moroccan mint tea and watch Marrakech change as the sun goes down.

The square becomes much more lively around sunset, making the evening a completely different experience from your morning visit.

Day 2: Palaces, Gardens & Moroccan Culture

Your second day is about discovering another side of Marrakech: beautiful gardens, royal history, architecture and Moroccan traditions.

Start with the Saadian Tombs

Begin your morning at the Saadian Tombs, located in the Kasbah area.

The tombs date from the Saadian period and are known for their beautiful decoration, colorful tiles and carved details.

The site is relatively small, so it can easily be combined with the other historic monuments in the southern Medina.

Visit El Badi & Bahia Palaces

From the Saadian Tombs, continue to El Badi Palace.

Unlike Bahia Palace, El Badi is mostly a magnificent ruin today. However, the huge courtyard, gardens and remaining walls give you an idea of the size and importance of the original palace.

Climb to one of the higher points for views over the surrounding area.

Lunch in Marrakech

Take a break for lunch before continuing with the afternoon.

This is also a good time to slow down. Marrakech can be hot, particularly during the summer months, so you don’t need to spend the entire day walking.

Visit Jardin Majorelle

In the afternoon, head outside the Medina to Jardin Majorelle.

The garden was created by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later became closely associated with Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé.

Today, it is one of Marrakech’s most famous attractions, known for its plants, water features and distinctive blue buildings.

If you want to visit the garden, we recommend checking the current ticketing arrangements and booking ahead during busy periods.

Yves Saint Laurent Museum

Fashion lovers can continue to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, located close to Jardin Majorelle.

The museum explores the designer’s work and his connection with Marrakech.

If you are more interested in gardens and Moroccan culture than fashion, you can simply enjoy more time at Jardin Majorelle instead.

Explore Le Jardin Secret

Return to the Medina and visit Le Jardin Secret, a peaceful garden hidden behind the busy streets of the old city.

It is a beautiful place to take a break from the noise of the souks.

The garden combines traditional Islamic garden design with exotic plants and an old Moroccan irrigation system.

Finish the Day with a Traditional Hammam

After a full day of sightseeing, a Moroccan hammam is a great way to relax.

A traditional hammam usually includes steam, a body scrub using Moroccan black soap and a washing treatment. Many modern spas also offer massages and other treatments.

For a more authentic experience, ask your riad or local guide for a reputable hammam rather than simply choosing the first one you see.

Day 3: Choose Your Perfect Marrakech Experience

For the third day, we recommend leaving some flexibility in your schedule.

After two days exploring the Medina and the main monuments, you can choose between exploring the countryside around Marrakech or enjoying a slower day in the city.

Option 1: Atlas Mountains Day Trip

If you enjoy nature, a day trip to the High Atlas Mountains is an excellent choice.

Leave Marrakech in the morning and travel towards the mountains. Along the way, you can enjoy views of traditional Berber villages, valleys and mountain landscapes.

Depending on the season and your interests, the day can include:

  • Mountain villages
  • Berber culture
  • Local lunch
  • Short walks
  • Panoramic viewpoints
  • Tea with a local family

This is our recommended option if you want to see a completely different side of Morocco.

Option 2: Agafay Desert Marrakech

Another popular option is a trip to the Agafay Desert, located outside Marrakech.

Agafay is not a Sahara sand desert, but its rocky landscapes and views of the Atlas Mountains create a beautiful setting for a day or half-day experience.

You can enjoy:

  • Camel riding
  • Lunch in a desert camp
  • Tea
  • Quad biking
  • Swimming
  • Sunset views

It is a good choice if you want a desert experience without spending several days traveling to Merzouga.

Option 3: A Relaxing Day in Marrakech

If you don’t want to leave the city, keep your third day slow.

Have breakfast on the rooftop of your riad, explore parts of the Medina you missed, visit a museum, enjoy a hammam or spend some time shopping.

You can also explore Gueliz, Marrakech’s modern district, which has cafés, restaurants, galleries and shops.

Where to Stay in Marrakech for 3 Days

For a first visit, we recommend staying in a traditional riad inside or close to the Medina.

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around an interior courtyard. Many have beautiful rooftop terraces, small pools and quiet courtyards.

Staying in the Medina means that many of the main attractions, restaurants and souks are within walking distance.

If you prefer modern hotels, restaurants and easier vehicle access, Gueliz or Hivernage may be better choices.

Medina

Best for: First-time visitors, culture, souks and historic sights.

Gueliz

Best for: Modern restaurants, cafés, shopping and nightlife.

Hivernage

Best for: Luxury hotels, resorts, spas and a more peaceful atmosphere.

How to Get Around Marrakech

The historic Medina is best explored on foot.

Many of the streets are narrow and cars cannot enter the smaller lanes. If you stay in a riad inside the Medina, your accommodation may arrange a meeting point and help you with your luggage.

For places outside the Medina, such as Jardin Majorelle, you can use a taxi or private transportation.

If you prefer a more comfortable experience, especially for families or travelers who do not want to deal with taxis, a private driver can make getting around much easier.

Is 3 Days Enough for Marrakech?

Yes. Three days in Marrakech is enough for a first visit if you plan your time well.

Two days allow you to see many of the major attractions, but three days gives you enough time to explore the Medina, visit the gardens and palaces, enjoy Moroccan food, experience a hammam and still have time to relax.

If you have more than three days, you can use Marrakech as a base for longer trips to the Atlas Mountains, Essaouira, the Agafay Desert or the Sahara.

Best Time to Spend 3 Days in Marrakech

Marrakech can be visited throughout the year, but spring and autumn are particularly comfortable for sightseeing.

Spring: March to May
Warm days and pleasant conditions for walking.

Summer: June to August
Very hot, especially during the afternoon. Plan sightseeing for the morning and late afternoon.

Autumn: September to November
Comfortable temperatures and a great time for exploring the city.

Winter: December to February
Mild days but cooler evenings. The Atlas Mountains may have snow, creating beautiful views from Marrakech on clear days.

Marrakech Travel Tips

1. Start early

The mornings are usually more comfortable for walking and sightseeing, especially during the hotter months.

2. Wear comfortable shoes

You will walk a lot in the Medina, and many streets are uneven.

3. Carry some Moroccan dirhams

Although many hotels and restaurants accept cards, cash is still useful for small shops, taxis and local vendors.

4. Dress respectfully

Marrakech is a tourist-friendly city, but it is still important to respect local culture. Comfortable, modest clothing is generally a good choice.

5. Be careful with unofficial guides

If someone approaches you in the Medina offering to show you around, make sure you know the price and agree before accepting the service.

For a historical tour, we recommend using an official local guide.

6. Take breaks

Don’t try to visit every attraction in one day. Marrakech is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace.

What to Eat During Your 3 Days in Marrakech

Your trip would not be complete without trying Moroccan food.

Make sure to try:

  • Tagine
  • Couscous
  • Moroccan salads
  • Pastilla
  • Harira
  • Moroccan mint tea
  • Fresh orange juice
  • Moroccan pastries
  • Msemen

For dinner, try a traditional Moroccan restaurant or enjoy a rooftop meal overlooking the Medina.

Final Thoughts: The Perfect 3 Days in Marrakech

Three days gives you enough time to experience the most important parts of Marrakech without rushing from one attraction to another.

Spend your first day discovering the Medina, souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa.

Use your second day for palaces, gardens, museums and a traditional hammam.

Then use your third day to experience more of Morocco with an Atlas Mountains or Agafay Desert trip, or simply slow down and enjoy Marrakech at your own pace.

And remember: Marrakech is not only about checking attractions off a list. Some of the best moments can be sitting on a rooftop with mint tea, walking through a quiet Medina street or watching the sunset over the red walls of the city.
